Ulcerative colitis When the colon is inflamed
“I have always diarrhoea.” “Painful abdominal cramps dominate over every other aspect of my life.” “I always have blood in my stools.”
This or a similar experience is what people report with regard to their suffering from ulcerative colitis.
Recurring attacks of diarrhoea, intestinal bleeding as well as stomach cramps and intense bloating characterize this inflammation in the colon. The urge to evacuate is often uncontrollable – the stool cannot be held back. There can be up to 40 evacuations daily and it’s understandable that this weakens the person enormously.
Modern medicine assumes this is a chronic immune reaction against the intestinal flora with genetic factors also playing a part, and which can be aggravated by stress and strain.
What is the Vedic medicine point of view on ulcerative colitis?
Ulcerative colitis from an Ayurvedic perspective
According to the Maharishi Ayurveda approach, ulcerative colitis starts with the loss of natural balance.
Metabolic residues develop continuously due to improper lifestyle. In the case of ulcerative colitis, toxins (in Ayurveda called “Ama”) accumulate in the colon. Everyone affected knows that food intolerance and heavy foods as well as stress and an unstable nervous system can serve as an amplifier or recurring trigger to the familiar symptoms.
In Ayurveda every patient is different and so each person’s ulcerative colitis complaint varies. The Ayurvedic approach at our Centre is holistic.
What can Ayurveda do for you?
In Vedic medicine, ulcerative colitis is addressed by combining various treatments into a multi-faceted approach adapted to your individual situation, as determined in a comprehensive diagnosis by one of our physicians.
An integrated approach
Increasingly, patients are finding that conventional therapies alone are not enough.
They recognize that the path to recovery must take place at all levels. For example, in ulcerative colitis, the focus can be on the elimination of toxins and the breakdown of pro-inflammatory substances, as well as balancing the daily diet. It is important to bring the natural regulatory principles back into a necessary balance. Dietary recommendations, helpful exercises as well as special herbal mixtures – all put together especially for you – help to lead a more conscious lifestyle. So that your natural self-healing powers can restore the health of the colon.
